The Green Academy and Center for Sustainability @ Tri-C trains students in the principles of sustainability, green construction, new energy codes, improving energy efficiency in residential construction, and interpreting green bid specs.

Basics of Sustainability and the Green Economy

Description of green economy and career opportunities in sustainability. Topics also include history and definitions, cost equations, implementation in large organizations, urban farming, recycling and waste disposal, Brownfield remediation and abatement, and renewable energy issues.

Certified Energy Manager

Since its inception in 1981, the Certified Energy Manager (CEM) credential has become widely accepted and used as a measure of professional accomplishment within the energy management field. It has gained industry-wide use as the standard for qualifying energy professionals both in the United States and abroad. It is recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Office of Federal Energy Management Programs (FEMP), and the U.S. Agency for International Development, as well as by numerous state energy offices, major utilities, corporations and energy service companies.

Certified Energy Manager (CEM) - Self Study Session

A senior engineer will facilitate an evening study session Monday through Thursday, dinner included, for any class participant desiring additional study time in a collaborative setting with their training colleagues.

Energy Efficient Construction Rehab

Learn basic construction skills to start a professional rehab on your home. Hands on practice of electrical wiring, basic carpentry, plumbing and demo/abatement will be presented along with appropriate tools, materials and safe work practices.

Increasing Your Home's Energy Efficiency

The student will learn how to gain energy efficiency in new construction, as well as in existing homes and structures. Specific practices and products will be demonstrated and an energy calculator will be used.

Interpreting Green Bid Specifications

Many new proposals are going green, both by design, intent, or by law. The bid specs contain language and specifications that are sometimes intimidating, restrictive, and have major financial impact on the proposal. This is a seminar that will address the concerns, study the variations of bid specifications that are appearing, and provide a methodology to successfully submit a winning proposal. Case studies and directed practice are part of this course.

LEED v3 Energy & Atmosphere

Two hour evening program will highlight changes in LEED v3 from professionals currently working on projects registered under LEED v3. Energy and atmosphere may be one of the hottest topics in green building right now, due to the cost savings associated with reduction of dependence on fossil fuels and the media’s glamorization of solar voltaic panels and windmills. Regional Priority Credit for Energy and Atmosphere credit 2 – On Site Renewable Energy will be discussed thoroughly.

LEED v3 Materials & Resources

Two hour evening program will highlight changes in LEED v3 from professionals currently working on projects registered under LEED v3. With local businesses leading the state in material collection and reuse, Regional Priority Credit for Materials and Resources credit 2.2 – Construction Waste Management – Divert 75% will showcased. In addition, Regional Priority Credit Materials and Resources credit 6 – Rapidly Renewable Materials, will be explored.

LEED v3 Program Series Kick-off

In this kick-off to the LEED v3 series, speakers will highlight the upcoming workshops, LEED v3, general changes in LEED 2009, Tri-C GACS update, USGBC update, and the North East Ohio Green Building Council (NEOGBC) update. The six upcoming technical sessions will be outlined, detailing the depth of training available at each workshop. In addition, learn how LEED v3 and GBCI’s new credential maintenance program will affect you, whether you are a LEED AP, or fall into the new credential categories.

Two hour evening program will highlight changes in LEED v3 Sustainable Sites credits from professionals currently working on projects registered under LEED v3. Discussion will outline how the Sustainable Sites Initiative is being implemented into future version of LEED and explore Regional Priority Credits for Sustainable Sites credit 6.1 – Stormwater Design – Quantity Control and Sustainable Sites credit 6.2 – Stormwater Design – Quality Control.

Discussion will be focused on the reasoning for changes, and explore Regional Priority Credits for Water Efficiency credit 2 – Innovative Wastewater Technologies.

NEO Green Building and Design Expo

All day program that will highlight events from Greenbuild in Phoenix. This event is in partnership with the NEOGBC. The event will include multiple break-out sessions, speakers, and an opportunity for trade show/vendor area to showcase local agencies/organizations and non-profit businesses.

Reading Green Bid Specs/LEED Paperwork Compliance

As sustainable buildings become more common, it is becoming increasingly important for contractors and tradespeople to become aware of and able to read and understand the language of “green”. This course will take these professionals from start to finish in understanding these terms and then applying them to bids and the necessary paperwork for a LEED pursuit project.

The ROI for Sustainable Projects

This course surveys the various methodologies to measure the financial and environmental impacts of sustainable practice. Different methods will be demonstrated with discussions of strengths and weaknesses of each tool. Several rationales will be covered to justify LEED construction.
